New ISI Chief Appointed: Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been named the new director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and will officially take over on September 30. This news was shared by state broadcaster PTV News on their official X account.

Currently, Gen Malik is serving as the adjutant general at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. He will replace Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who has been in the position since 2021, following his appointment by then-prime minister Imran Khan.

Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who began his military career in September 1988, previously led Corps V in Karachi. He also commanded a brigade in Kurram Agency, led the Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan, and was the commandant of the Command and Staff College in Quetta before becoming the Karachi corps commander in December 2020.

Gen Asim Malik was promoted to lieutenant general in October 2021 and became the army’s adjutant general. Throughout his career, he has served in the Balochistan infantry division and led an infantry brigade in Waziristan. PTV News noted that he received an “honorary sword” during his military training.

In addition to his military roles, Gen Malik has worked as the chief instructor at the National Defence University in Islamabad and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta. He is a graduate of Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.
