Netanyahu Criticises Australian Leadership After Deadly Sydney Shooting
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticised Australia’s political leadership following a deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which left at least 16 people dead and dozens injured.
In his remarks, Netanyahu alleged that the Australian government failed to act decisively as anti-Jewish sentiment was rising in the country. He claimed that the leadership remained silent during a critical period and did not take sufficient preventive measures to curb hatred and extremism.
The criticism comes a day after two armed individuals opened fire on civilians at the popular Bondi Beach area in Sydney. Australian authorities have officially classified the attack as an act of terrorism. One of the attackers was shot dead at the scene, while the second suspect was arrested and remains in custody.
According to Australian police, the attack resulted in 16 fatalities and left around 40 people injured, including civilians and law enforcement officers. The incident triggered widespread panic, as the beach was crowded at the time of the shooting.
Australian media reported that a civilian present at the scene showed exceptional bravery by confronting and disarming one of the attackers, an act that police believe helped prevent further loss of life.
The New South Wales Police Commissioner identified the deceased attacker as 50-year-old Sajid Akram, while the injured suspect in custody was named as 24-year-old Naveed Akram. Police also disclosed that Sajid Akram had held a firearms licence for the past 10 years and was a registered member of a gun club.
The Sydney shooting has reignited debate in Australia over gun laws, extremism, and the rise in antisemitic incidents, while Netanyahu’s remarks have added an international political dimension to the tragedy.
