Mushtaq Ahmed released from Israeli detention

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday confirmed that former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed has been released from Israeli detention following his arrest during the Gaza-bound Sumud Flotilla mission.

According to details, Mushtaq Ahmed was detained by Israeli naval forces while traveling in international waters toward Gaza to help break the Israeli blockade on the besieged Palestinian territory.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ishaq Dar said that Mushtaq Ahmed is now safely at the Pakistan Embassy in Amman, Jordan, and is in good health and high spirits. He added that the embassy is fully facilitating his stay and will arrange his return to Pakistan according to his preference and schedule.

“I am pleased to confirm that former Senator Mushtaq has been released and is now safely with the Pakistan Embassy in Amman. He is in good health and high spirits. The Embassy stands ready to facilitate his return to Pakistan, in accordance with his wishes and convenience. I am pleased to extend our gratitude to all our friendly countries who actively engaged and assisted in this regard with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan,” Ishaq Dar stated on X.

Earlier, Pir Mazhar Saeed Shah, another participant of the Gaza Sumud Flotilla, safely returned to Pakistan after being detained by Israeli authorities. He arrived in Islamabad via Doha and was given a warm welcome at the airport.

It is pertinent to mention that Israel recently released 137 activists from the Sumud Flotilla, including 36 Turkish nationals, as international diplomatic pressure mounted for their release.

Mushtaq Ahmed’s release has been welcomed widely across Pakistan’s political and diplomatic circles, with officials lauding the Foreign Office’s efforts and thanking friendly nations that played a key role in ensuring his safe release.
