More Than 200 People Died in Landslides in Southern Ethiopia

More than 200 people have died in two landslides in southern Ethiopia, authorities said. The first landslide happened on Monday in a remote area of the Gofa zone after heavy rains. A second landslide followed, burying people who had come to help, state officials said on Tuesday.

The disaster struck in the Kencho-Shacha locality, killing at least 148 men and 81 women, according to the local Communications Affairs Department. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Five people were rescued from the mud and are being treated at medical facilities, reported the government-owned Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

EBC cited local administrator Dagemawi Ayele, saying that most of those killed had gone to help the inhabitants of a house hit by the first landslide.

The state has been hit hard by the short seasonal rains between April and May, causing flooding and mass displacement, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In May, OCHA reported that floods impacted over 19,000 people in several zones, displacing over a thousand and damaging livelihoods and infrastructure.

The southern region has experienced landslides before. In 2018, at least 32 people died in two separate incidents within a week.

While some parts of the country are dealing with flooding and landslides, other areas face severe drought, forcing traditional herding communities to explore alternative food production methods. According to the UN report, millions in the country are suffering from malnutrition due to recent climate-related issues.
