Over 1,000 killed as massive landslide buries entire Sudan village in Darfur

KHARTOUM – September 2, 2025: A catastrophic landslide has wiped out an entire village in Sudan’s conflict-hit Darfur region, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving only a single survivor, according to a statement by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM).

The disaster struck Tarasin village in the Marra mountains on Sunday after days of relentless rainfall triggered a massive landslip. The SLM, which controls parts of the mountainous region, confirmed that all residents had been buried under the debris. “Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor,” the group said.

The landslide completely destroyed part of the fertile area, known for its citrus orchards. The SLM has appealed to the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations to urgently step in with relief and recovery operations.

The tragedy comes as Sudan remains engulfed in a brutal civil war between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a conflict that has already created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The SLM has largely remained outside of the fighting but continues to control parts of the Marra mountains — Sudan’s highest mountain range.

Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, who is aligned with the army, described the disaster as a “humanitarian tragedy that goes beyond the borders of the region.” He called for swift international intervention to aid survivors and assist in recovery efforts.

However, relief operations face enormous obstacles. Much of Darfur, including the landslide-hit zone, is inaccessible to aid agencies due to ongoing violence and restricted humanitarian access, severely limiting the chances of immediate rescue or body recovery.

The full scale of the devastation is still unfolding, but aid agencies warn that the combination of war, displacement, and natural disasters is pushing Sudan deeper into an unprecedented humanitarian collapse.
