Man Sentenced for Abusing and Spitting at Muslim Bus Driver in the UK

A man in the UK has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for racially abusing and spitting at a Muslim bus driver, authorities announced on Tuesday.

Michael Mongan, 39, was convicted of launching a racist tirade and spitting at the driver on August 7 in Hayes after his payment card was declined. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reported that Mongan’s behavior included yelling “Muslim terrorist” and other offensive language while demanding the driver exit the bus and hitting the protective screen.

The incident, captured in a viral video, led to Mongan’s arrest on August 9. The CPS noted that Mongan’s actions were influenced by recent national unrest. Police and prosecutors believe that the violent disturbances across the UK emboldened Mongan.

The violence was part of broader unrest in the UK, with far-right rioters targeting Muslims, minority groups, and immigrants. This unrest was fueled by false online claims that a Muslim asylum seeker was responsible for the July 29 stabbing deaths of three children in Southport. The attacker has since been identified as Axel Rudakubana, a 17-year-old from Cardiff with Rwandan parents, but this clarification has not stopped the far-right mobs.

As of August 8, authorities have arrested 483 people and filed 149 charges related to the riots in various towns and cities across England.
