Lahore university student attempts suicide in a deeply disturbing incident that has once again drawn attention to mental health challenges faced by students, as a 21-year-old female enrolled at a private university on Raiwind Road remains in critical condition following the incident, police confirmed on Monday.
According to law enforcement officials, the student sustained severe injuries after falling from the second floor of a Lahore University building located in the Nawab Town area. She was rushed to the university hospital immediately after the incident, where doctors are providing intensive medical care in an effort to stabilise her condition. Hospital authorities have described her state as critical.
Police officials said they reached the scene shortly after being alerted and have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are examining available CCTV footage from the campus and recording statements from witnesses as part of the inquiry.
The incident has sparked serious concern as it comes only days after another student at the same university reportedly attempted suicide in a similar manner. The back-to-back cases have intensified discussions around student wellbeing, academic pressure, and the availability of mental health support services within higher education institutions.
Lahore University officials have not yet issued a formal statement regarding the latest incident, while security and administrative measures on campus are reportedly being reviewed to ensure student safety.
Earlier, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed grave concern over a recent student death at the University of Lahore, calling it a painful reminder of broader systemic issues within Pakistan’s academic and social structures. In a strongly worded statement, HRCP stressed that such incidents should not be treated as isolated cases but rather as the outcome of rigid academic policies, economic stress, and the increasing commercialisation of education.
The commission highlighted that the affected student was described as talented and hardworking, yet reportedly faced harsh academic penalties over minor attendance issues due to inflexible departmental rules. HRCP warned that unchecked academic pressure, combined with inadequate mental health support, could continue to place vulnerable students at risk.
