Businessmen in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have issued a stern warning to shut down their industries due to the alarming rise in the extortion and security threats they face. President of the Hayyatabad Industrial State, Malik Imran Ishaq, revealed that industrialists are being subjected to constant demands for extortion money, and failure to comply has resulted in attacks on their properties. The escalating law and order situation has sparked concerns among businessmen and residents, prompting them to demand enhanced security measures from the government. Malik Imran Ishaq, President of the Hayyatabad Industrial State, has highlighted the distressing situation faced by industrialists in KP. Fearing for their safety, industrialists have warned that if protection is not provided promptly, they will be left with no choice but to close down their units. The law and order situation in KP has witnessed a concerning rise in extortion incidents. In 2022 alone, a total of 411 incidents were reported in the province, with 342 cases filed for extortion. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has been actively involved in addressing extortion cases in KP. In 2022, the department registered FIRs for 69 extortion incidents and successfully apprehended 173 individuals involved in such illegal activities. While these efforts demonstrate some progress, they also underscore the persistent challenges in maintaining law and order in the province. A comprehensive and coordinated approach is required to curb extortion and ensure the safety of businesses and individuals.
