On Tuesday, Britain’s King Charles revealed his first official portrait since his coronation last May. The portrait, created by artist Jonathan Yeo, shows Charles in the uniform of the Welsh Guards against a vibrant red background, with a butterfly above his shoulder.
Yeo, who is 53 and has previously painted Charles’ late father Prince Philip, explained the significance of the butterfly. “Like the butterfly hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as Charles’s role in public life has changed,” Yeo said. “I wanted to blend traditional Royal portraiture with a modern touch to reflect a 21st-century monarchy and highlight Charles’s deep humanity.”
The portrait was unveiled at Buckingham Palace. It was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate Charles’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company, a grant-giving organization, in 2022.
The public had mixed reactions to King Charles’ new portrait. Comments on the royal family’s official Instagram account showed different opinions. One person wrote, “I think this is beautiful and such a break from the traditional portraits.” Another said, “A lovely portrait of King Charles! I love the way the muted background draws attention to his face!”
However, not everyone liked it. Some people were unsure about the redness in the painting. One comment read, “The face is great but the rest looks like a blood bath.” Another person said, “I’m sorry but his portrait looks like he’s in hell.” Someone else asked, “Does it reference the colonial bloodshed produced by British imperialism?”
Artist Jonathan Yeo had four sittings with Charles to create the portrait, starting when Charles was Prince of Wales. The final sitting was in 2023 when Charles was King, at Clarence House. The portrait, which measures 230 cm by 165 cm, will be displayed at the Philip Mould Gallery in London from May 16 to June 14.
