Karachi receives heavy showers across major areas
KARACHI: Karachi received widespread rainfall on Tuesday, bringing light to moderate showers across various parts of the city and prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
The rainfall lashed key arteries including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Tariq Road, Saddar, and M.A. Jinnah Road, causing traffic congestion at several points. Areas such as Scheme 33, Safoora Chowrangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Road, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and University Road also recorded showers. Residents in Nazimabad, SITE Area, Orangi Town, and nearby localities experienced similar downpours, adding to the city-wide impact.
While the rain provided much-needed relief from the sweltering heat, concerns grew over the risk of urban flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Municipal authorities were placed on alert to respond quickly to drainage issues and ensure traffic flow during peak hours.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Karachi is expected to witness moderate to heavy showers throughout the day, with “very heavy downpours” predicted in some areas. The weather system, originating as a low-pressure zone in Madhya Pradesh, India, has moved into Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Sindh, bringing strong monsoon currents into Karachi and eastern Punjab.
The PMD added that the current spell of monsoon showers is being intensified by a deep depression centred over Tharparkar, increasing the likelihood of prolonged rainfall in the city.
