Karachi Metropolitan Corporation sells Rs227m worth of scrap
KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) sold Rs227 million worth of scrap and utilised the proceeds to procure modern heavy vehicles for various municipal departments, Mayor Murtaza Wahab said on Thursday.
Addressing an induction ceremony held at the KMC head office, the mayor termed the move an important milestone aimed at improving operational efficiency and municipal service delivery across the city.
Mayor Wahab said the procurement was financed entirely through funds generated from the auction of unused and scrapped vehicles, following approval from the City Council. He added that Rs110 million was allocated for the purchase of heavy vehicles, including mount trucks.
The mayor formally handed over the newly inducted vehicles to the Engineering Department, Anti-Encroachment Department, Parks Department, and Veterinary Department.
“Upon approval by the City Council, it was decided to auction unused as well as scrapped items, which resulted in the generation of Rs227 million,” Wahab said. “Using these proceeds, we were able to purchase five new heavy vehicles. Two have been allocated to the E&M Department, one to the Anti-Encroachment Department, one to the Parks Department, and one to the Veterinary Department.”
He added that inducting modern vehicles would significantly improve service delivery and field operations. The mayor also revealed that five additional vehicles are set to be procured for other departments, while the repair of five buses has already been completed.
Accompanied by Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Jaman Darwan, and senior KMC officers, the mayor said the corporation was upgrading civic amenities using its own financial resources.
He explained that KMC’s revenue had increased due to a positive and effective management approach, allowing better utilisation of available resources.
“The KMC now has sufficient resources to work on multiple development projects simultaneously, ranging from neighbourhood streets to large-scale infrastructure works,” Wahab said.
He added that the newly procured heavy vehicles would play a vital role in speeding up anti-encroachment operations, improving park maintenance, and enhancing beautification efforts across Karachi.
