Kapkot MLA Suresh Gadiya narrowly escapes cloudburst disaster in Bageshwar

Bageshwar: A dramatic rescue unfolded in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district after Kapkot MLA Suresh Gadiya narrowly escaped a life-threatening incident while inspecting areas devastated by a sudden cloudburst.

According to officials, the MLA was visiting flood-hit zones to review damage when he attempted to cross a raging stream swollen by cloudburst rains. The powerful current caused him to slip, while his official gunner was swept away downstream. Chaos followed as locals and rescue teams rushed to help.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), with the assistance of villagers, launched an urgent rescue operation. Both the MLA and his gunner were pulled to safety, though the MLA lost his mobile phone and the gunner’s service carbine was washed away. Authorities later said efforts were underway to recover the missing weapon, but the immediate priority had been saving lives.

Cloudbursts – a growing threat in Uttarakhand

Cloudbursts are among the most dangerous weather events in the Himalayan region. They occur when intense rainfall dumps massive volumes of water—often more than 100mm in an hour—over a localized area. In mountainous terrain like Uttarakhand, this sudden deluge leads to flash floods, landslides, and destruction within minutes.

Over the past decade, Uttarakhand has witnessed several deadly cloudbursts, including those in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Kinnaur, which caused widespread devastation. Experts warn that climate change and deforestation are increasing both the frequency and severity of such incidents, leaving villages, roads, and rivers highly vulnerable.

Disaster management authorities have repeatedly urged residents and officials to exercise extreme caution while moving near rivers and streams during heavy rains. Despite these warnings, flash floods often catch people off guard due to their sudden onset.

Who is Suresh Gadiya?

Suresh Gadiya, the sitting MLA from Kapkot constituency in Bageshwar, is a grassroots politician known for being active in local relief and development work. His recent visit to the disaster-hit areas was part of his efforts to assess damage and ensure state support for affected residents.

Following his rescue, Gadiya expressed gratitude to the SDRF and locals, acknowledging that without their swift action, the situation could have turned fatal. He also assured people that rehabilitation and recovery work would be given top priority.

Ongoing alert

Heavy monsoon rains are forecast to continue across Uttarakhand, and officials have placed disaster response units on high alert. Villagers in flood-prone areas have been urged to avoid traveling near swollen rivers, as unpredictable cloudbursts remain a recurring danger in the Himalayan state.
