Israeli Strikes Claim 81 Lives in Gaza in 24 Hours as Conflict Escalates

Health officials reported that Israeli forces struck central Gaza Strip areas on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least nine Palestinians. In the past 24 hours, Israeli strikes have killed at least 81 Palestinians and injured 198, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

In Rafah, two people were killed in an airstrike, and Israeli tanks raided the northern part of the city before retreating. This tactic has been used by Israeli forces in other areas before making deeper invasions.

The Israeli military stated that their troops are carrying out precise, intelligence-based operations in Rafah. They claimed to have eliminated a terrorist cell and a launcher that fired at their troops. Airstrikes have targeted 25 locations across Gaza in the past day, and troops continue to operate in the central area to dismantle structures used to observe soldiers.

Despite nine months of conflict, Hamas-led Palestinian fighters continue to target Israeli forces with anti-tank rockets, mortar bombs, and occasional rocket barrages into Israel.

Israel’s defense minister said the military has made significant progress and that the pressure is effective. He mentioned that the operations in Gaza have created conditions necessary to negotiate the return of hostages.

Israel is determined to eliminate Hamas after its fighters killed 1,200 people and took over 250 hostages on October 7, according to Israeli figures. The military claims to have killed half of Hamas’ military leadership and captured or killed about 14,000 fighters, which is around half of the estimated fighting force.

Gaza health authorities report that Israel’s retaliatory strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 38,000 Palestinians. Israel reports 326 of its soldiers have died in Gaza.

The US military announced it is ending its mission to operate a temporary floating pier for delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The effort will now move to the Israeli port of Ashdod. The pier had helped deliver 20 million pounds of aid but was only operational for about 20 days due to weather disruptions.

Diplomatic efforts by Arab mediators and the US to stop the fighting are currently stalled. Both Israel and Hamas say they are open to more talks. A potential deal would aim to end the war and release Israeli hostages in exchange for many Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

US President Joe Biden and other leaders have called for a post-war plan with a clear timeline for establishing a Palestinian state. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and right-wing parties oppose a two-state solution. Israel’s parliament voted 68-9 against the establishment of a Palestinian state, claiming it would threaten Israel’s existence and perpetuate the conflict.

On Wednesday, Israel freed 13 Palestinians who had been detained during the Gaza offensive. Many released Palestinians have accused Israeli forces of mistreatment and torture. Nearly 20 Palestinians have reportedly died in Israeli detention, which Israel denies.
