Israel Police Arrest Man for Threatening to Kill Netanyahu

JERUSALEM: Israeli police announced on Thursday that they had arrested a man who threatened to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to officials, the incident occurred just before the Jewish New Year holiday began on Monday evening. A man in his forties from the southern town of Kiryat Gat walked into the local police station and declared his intent to kill the Israeli premier.

“The suspect told officers that he planned to purchase a firearm and shoot the Prime Minister three times,” the police said in a statement.

The man was taken into custody immediately, and authorities confirmed that an indictment will be filed on Thursday. Police have also requested that the suspect remain detained until the completion of legal proceedings.

The development comes at a politically sensitive time for Netanyahu, whose government has been losing public support amid the ongoing Gaza war against Hamas militants, now nearing its second year.

Currently, 48 hostages are still held in Gaza, with at least 20 believed to be alive. Families of the captives continue to pressure the Israeli government to strike a deal for their release, further intensifying political divisions within Israel.
