ISLAMABAD – A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Tuesday when a car carrying a father and his daughter was swept away by flash floods following torrential monsoon rains in Islamabad’s DHA Phase 5. The tragic scene unfolded in front of horrified onlookers, with rescue operations now underway to locate the missing individuals.
Flash Floods Hit Islamabad
According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle was engulfed by a sudden surge of floodwater, leaving the occupants unable to escape. The force of the water pushed the car into a drain, and despite immediate calls to emergency services, the car disappeared within minutes.
Rescue teams have since been actively searching the area, but as of now, no update on the fate of the father-daughter duo has been confirmed.
Rescue 1122 on High Alert
Amid the ongoing monsoon spell, Rescue 1122 had already issued a high-alert warning for Islamabad and Rawalpindi earlier in the day, anticipating dangerous flood conditions due to heavy rainfall.
“Special 1122 teams have been deployed across key locations, particularly near the Soan River,” said District Emergency Officer Sibghatullah.
Key safety measures in place include:
- Deployment of water boats and emergency gear
- Cancellation of all staff leaves
- Continuous monitoring of Nullah Lai and other local drains
- Operationalization of a central flood control room
Section 144 Imposed in Rawalpindi
In a bid to prevent further disaster, the local administration has invoked Section 144, prohibiting:
- Disposal of garbage or construction material into rain drains
- Unauthorized movement near overflowing drains and rivers
- Any construction activities that could block water flow
Authorities are also appealing to residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel in flooded zones.
A Monsoon of Tragedies
This tragic incident in Islamabad comes on the heels of a similar disaster in Gilgit-Baltistan, where:
