In a distressing incident that highlights ongoing tensions, an Indian teacher is under scrutiny for making offensive remarks within a classroom setting. The teacher, identified as Hema Gulati, has been accused of asking Muslim students why their families did not relocate to Pakistan during the Partition, sparking outrage among the community and sparking discussions about religious discrimination in the educational system.
The incident transpired at Government Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Gandhi Nagar, Delhi. Following complaints by grade 9 students, the police have registered a case against Gulati. Authorities are currently investigating the matter, taking the allegations seriously.
Gulati’s comments, which targeted Muslim students, were perceived as insensitive and divisive. She reportedly said, “During Partition, you did not go to Pakistan. You stayed in India. You have no contribution to India’s freedom.” These words have ignited anger and concern within the community.
The incident’s impact has led parents and citizens to demand action and accountability. A mother with two children attending the same school expressed her distress, stating, “If this teacher goes unpunished, others will get emboldened. They should be told to just teach and not speak on matters about which they have no knowledge. There is no use of a teacher who creates differences among students. We demand that the teacher be removed from the school, she should not teach in any school.”
This occurrence is not an isolated event, as another incident of religious discrimination emerged recently in Uttar Pradesh. A teacher, Trapta Tyagi, was recorded instructing Hindu students to physically harm a Muslim classmate, indicating a disturbing trend of Islamophobia and religious intolerance.
The incident involving Gulati raises concerns about the rise of religious discrimination in India, especially since the ascent of the Hindu nationalist BJP to power in 2015. Reports suggest that religious tensions have escalated, with incidents of violence targeting religious minorities, including Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs.
In the United States’ annual reports on religious freedom, India has been criticized for various attacks against religious minorities. Human rights organizations have also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership of promoting a climate of religious nationalism that disproportionately affects marginalized communities.
