India releases more water into Sutlej River, flood threat rises in Punjab and Sindh

India releases more water into Sutlej River

ISLAMABAD: India has released another spell of water into the Sutlej River, heightening fears of a new wave of flooding across Punjab and Sindh, reported on Monday.

According to official communication, the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad informed authorities about the release at 8:00am. A high flood alert has been sounded downstream of Harike and Ferozepur barrages.

The fresh inflow comes just a day after India issued a similar alert, with massive volumes of water already devastating parts of central Punjab and now coursing through the southern belt. The surge is expected to reach Sindh as floodwaters move from Head Punjnad towards Guddu Barrage.

The Flood Forecasting Division reported that 543,579 cusecs were passing through Trimmu Barrage, while Head Punjnad faced an even more furious flow at 564,604 cusecs.

Punjab’s river system is under extreme pressure. The Ravi is swelling with 123,168 cusecs at Sidhnai and flood levels rising at Shahdara and Balloki. The Chenab is also raging, recording 543,000 cusecs at Trimmu, while both Head Khanki and Qadirabad have registered 145,000 cusecs each.

The Sutlej river, however, poses the most immediate danger, with 319,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala and a critical 564,000 cusecs at Head Panjnad, leaving downstream areas at severe risk. Authorities have been instructed to stay on maximum alert as floodwaters continue to rise.
