Gunman Kills Four, Including Police Officer, in Manhattan Skyscraper Shooting

New York, July 29, 2025 – Tragedy struck Midtown Manhattan on Monday when a heavily armed gunman opened fire inside a commercial skyscraper, killing four people, including an off-duty NYPD officer, and injuring several others before taking his own life. Authorities confirmed that the violent incident unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise office tower that houses major firms like the NFL, KPMG, Blackstone, and Rudin Management.

According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the officer who lost his life in the attack was Didul Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi-American who had served with the New York Police Department (NYPD) for over three years. Commissioner Tisch described him as a hero, stating, “He put himself in harm’s way. He died as he lived — a hero.”

Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was remembered for his dedication to service and bravery. His death has shaken both the Bangladeshi-American community and the wider law enforcement fraternity in New York.

The Shooter and His Trail

The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, a man from Las Vegas, reportedly had a history of mental health issues. While his exact motive remains unclear, authorities believe the attack may have been premeditated. Tamura’s cross-country travel route was detailed by the police: starting in Colorado on July 26, then moving through Nebraska, Iowa, Columbia, and New Jersey, before arriving in New York City on Monday at 4:24 AM.

Upon arriving in Manhattan, surveillance footage captured Tamura parking a BMW, armed with an M4 rifle. He then entered the building lobby, where he shot a woman, before moving to the 33rd floor and fatally shooting another victim inside a real estate office. He later turned the weapon on himself in a hallway.

Manhattan Skyscraper Shooting: Casualties and Investigation

In total, four individuals were killed, including Officer Islam and two other civilians. One man remains in critical condition, while four others suffered minor injuries while trying to escape the chaos.

Police have recovered the rifle used in the attack, along with a revolver, magazines, and ammunition from Tamura’s vehicle. Investigators are now focused on understanding why the gunman targeted 345 Park Avenue, a location that holds several high-profile tenants.

Mayor Eric Adams called the shooting a “horrific and senseless act of violence” and confirmed that counter-terrorism units and the FBI are also involved in the ongoing investigation.

This attack has renewed debates around gun violence, mental health, and security protocols in commercial buildings. It has also brought global attention to the growing number of mass shootings occurring in the United States, even in cities known for strict gun laws like New York.

As New Yorkers mourn the lives lost in yet another tragic shooting, questions linger about how such a well-armed individual was able to cross state lines undetected, and why such a location was chosen for this brutal act.
