NEW YORK – Maryam Khan, a Pakistan-born member of the House of Representatives in Connecticut, and her family were subjected to a shocking assault after attending Eid ul Adha prayers in the capital city of Hartford. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has garnered condemnation from local officials and community leaders.
Vulgar Remarks and Assault:
According to the Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Khan, accompanied by her three children, sister, and a friend, was targeted by a man who began by making vulgar and obscene remarks. The situation quickly escalated when the individual physically assaulted Khan, grabbing her and throwing her to the ground. The Hartford Police Department did not disclose Khan’s identity in their official statement but acknowledged that a woman had been approached and subjected to unwanted advances.
Arrest and Charges:
Law enforcement authorities promptly responded to the attack, and the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Andrey Desmond, attempted to prevent Khan from leaving the scene while continuing to assault her. The suspect has been arrested and is now facing charges of third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree breach of peace, and interfering with police.
