ISLAMABAD: It was reported on Friday that US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, met with Pakistan Tehree-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice-President, Fawad Chaudhry, at his residence.
The meeting, which took place five or six days prior, was confirmed by Fawad in a statement. Fawad had previously met with Ambassador Blome and other senior officials in February of this year to discuss the worsening human rights situation in Pakistan.
The PTI leader, during the meeting, informed the US official about the party’s concerns regarding the misuse of laws by the coalition government against the political opponents.
Fawad Chaudhry’s wife Hiba Fawad Chaudhry too to Twitter and shared the photo with the US ambassador.
The PTI is attempting to improve its relationship with the US, having previously accused the US of toppling the Imran Khan-led government in April last year. While Khan had long blamed the US for the regime change conspiracy, he changed his position on the matter in November of last year.
This follows Fawad’s previous meeting with Ambassador Blome and senior officials in February of this year to discuss the worsening human rights situation in Pakistan. The meeting with Ambassador Blome is significant as it indicates a renewed effort by the PTI to establish a more positive relationship with the US. The two countries have had a strained relationship in recent years, with tensions rising over issues such as Pakistan’s alleged support for the Taliban in Afghanistan and the US’s use of drones in Pakistan.
