Etzaz Hussain cleared to represent Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The long wait for Pakistan football fans is finally over — Norway-based midfielder Etzaz Hussain has been cleared by FIFA to represent Pakistan, ending years of speculation about his international future.
The announcement came via Football Pakistan’s official account, confirming: “Etzaz Hussain cleared to play for Pakistan national team! FIFA approves switch from Norway to #PakistanFootball for the Odds BK midfielder. Etzaz Hussain won four Norwegian league titles with Molde FK.”

The 32-year-old’s FIFA clearance to switch allegiance from Norway to Pakistan was confirmed on Thursday. He is now expected to make his much-anticipated debut for the Green Shirts in October when Pakistan take on Afghanistan at Islamabad’s Jinnah Stadium.
A European-trained midfielder for Pakistan
Hussain brings a wealth of experience, having represented Norway at youth levels including U17, U18, U19, U21, and U23 — though he never earned a senior cap. His grounding in European football and domestic success, including four Norwegian league titles with Molde FK, sets him apart from most players in Pakistan’s current setup.
For years, Hussain has been seen as a potential game-changer for Pakistan’s midfield, capable of injecting creativity and stability.
Past hurdles and new opportunities
Last year, Hussain was close to making his debut but a reported fallout with then head coach Stephen Constantine prevented his inclusion. With a new coach now actively scouting diaspora players, Hussain finally has the opportunity to showcase his talents on the international stage.
Fans are hopeful that his arrival will mark a turning point for Pakistan football, which has long struggled to establish itself on the Asian stage.
