Electric Tram Routes in Lahore Announced: Complete Route Map, Features & Launch Details

Electric Tram Routes in Lahore Announced

The Punjab government has officially unveiled the electric tram routes in Lahore, a groundbreaking initiative that promises to redefine urban transport in the provincial capital. The project will run along Canal Road from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig, offering a cleaner, faster, and more comfortable travel option for thousands of daily commuters.

Following the success of electric buses in Punjab, authorities are now expanding their eco-friendly transport network to include trams. Officials believe this step will ease traffic congestion, reduce air pollution, and modernize the city’s public transport system. The tram will operate on the extreme left side of Canal Road, ensuring minimal disruption to existing traffic, while underpasses along the route will be streamlined into single lanes to improve flow. The Jail Road underpass will be shifted from the left to the right side, and road widths near tram stops will be expanded to make boarding easier and safer.

The state-of-the-art tram has been imported from China and consists of three interconnected compartments. It runs entirely on electricity, producing zero emissions, and can carry up to 250 passengers at a time. With just a 10-minute charge, it can travel between 25 and 27 kilometers. Although designed to operate like a subway, it runs on existing roads, making it an adaptable and cost-effective transport solution. A pilot project is already underway near Lahore Airport to test its battery life and performance under local traffic conditions.

In the initial phase, the service will be free for all passengers. The Transport Department has confirmed that affordable ticket prices will be introduced only after the trial period proves successful. According to a Public Relations Officer, the tram was assembled at the Ali Town Depot and will first operate on Canal Road as part of a pilot program before expanding to other parts of the city.

The electric tram routes in Lahore are also expected to boost tourism, as Canal Road is a scenic route lined with greenery and close to major educational institutions. This initiative aligns with the Punjab government’s broader vision of reducing fuel consumption, improving air quality, and providing modern transport facilities to citizens. Experts believe this project will encourage more people to shift from private cars to public transport, easing pressure on Lahore’s congested roads.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has reiterated her commitment to sustainable transport solutions, and this tram project stands as a major milestone in that effort. With future plans including the construction of an underground road from Jallo to Harbanspura, Lahore is set to witness a significant transformation in its connectivity and commuting experience.
