Dubai Police Crack Down on Beggars During Ramadan

The campaign against begging was initiated by Dubai Police General Command, along with cooperation from strategic partners including the General Department of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, Dubai Municipality, and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai.

Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Department of Suspects and Criminal Phenomena at the General Department of Criminal and Investigation, mentioned that this campaign helps in reducing the number of beggars each year. During Ramadan this year, 202 beggars have been arrested so far, including 112 males and 90 females.

Most of the arrested individuals were on visit visas, while others were residents or violators of residency laws taking advantage of the charitable atmosphere of Ramadan to earn money easily.

Dubai Police, along with partners, create a security plan annually to combat begging by increasing patrols in areas where beggars are often found. Begging poses a threat to society’s security, tarnishes the country’s image, and affects its civilized appearance.

Begging is often linked to crimes such as theft and pickpocketing, as well as the exploitation of vulnerable individuals like children, the sick, and people with disabilities by organized begging groups. Brigadier Al Shamsi emphasized the presence of official charities where individuals can seek financial assistance or make donations for others.

He urged the public to report any beggars they encounter by calling the hotline 901 or using the ‘Police Eye’ service on the police app, as well as through the E-Crime platform (www.ecrime.ae).”
