Donald Trump, the former US President, has asked his fellow Republicans in Congress to reduce funding for the Department of Justice and the FBI after he pleaded not guilty to 34 criminal charges in Manhattan court in New York.
This request appears to have no clear basis as the charges filed against him were by the Manhattan district attorney and not the federal departments he targeted. Despite this, Trump is currently facing two criminal investigations by the Justice Department, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, which focus on his alleged attempts to influence the 2020 election results and the possession of confidential documents after leaving the White House.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump encouraged Republicans to defund the Justice Department and FBI, which seems unlikely given the Democrat majority in the Senate and the lack of support from some Republicans. Trump’s call for cutting the departments’ budgets also contradicts his previous support for increased funding during his presidency.
It is worth noting that reducing funding for the departments would have no impact on a separate investigation led by a county prosecutor in Georgia.
Republican leaders on Capitol Hill are facing a new challenge after former President Donald Trump’s call to defund the Department of Justice and the FBI. This has put the Republican leaders in a difficult position as they have been championing the message that Republicans are tough on crime.
One such Trump ally is House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, who on Sunday endorsed the idea of cutting money for the Justice Department and FBI. While McConnell has chastised the Justice Department and FBI for “harassing” conservatives, many Republicans believe that the idea of cutting federal law enforcement money amid what they say is a national crime wave is politically dangerous.
Trump’s call to defund the nation’s top federal law enforcement agencies has now muddied the message that Republicans are tough on crime, and experts and strategists warn that this move will make Republicans look radical and foolish in the eyes of many voters they need to win over.
