PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary shares copy of the letter, also call upon EU and UK Parliamentarians to raise issue of human rights’ violations in Pakistan.
ISLAMABAD: US Senate Foreign Relations Committee senior member and Congressional leader Brad Sherman wrote a letter to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in favor of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Brad Sherman while addressing the US Secretary of State said that it was in the US interest that human rights in Pakistan are supported and that the US-Pakistan relationship should be a manifestation of US priorities regarding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The letter stated that the US does not intervene in Pakistan’s internal government affairs. “But we should not turn a blind eye when the human rights of the Pakistani people are threatened,” it said.
The letter also stated that the US should reiterate its position that the Pakistani government should respect people’s freedom of expression, assembly, and the right to peaceful protest. It is important to have a democratic and happy Pakistan where people can have democratic dialogue freely.
Brad Sherman expressed concern that last year, political figures, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Chief of Staff Shehbaz Gill and journalist Jamil Farooqi, were targeted for explicit violence and sexual misconduct. In the letter, he wrote that the arrest of Amin Gandapur has raised concerns and the inclusion of several cases against Imran Khan is worrying, and the use of force against his supporters and the arrest of protesters is also a cause for concern. Imran Khan’s speeches and press conferences have been problematic as well.
Taking to Twitter, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary also shared the copies of the letter and criticized the coalition government.
He said, “ Letter by a senior member of USA Congress Foreign Affairs committee to Secretary Blinkin shows the growing concerns of international community on the HR abuses in Pak by a fascist government,”.
Fawad Chaudhary also called upon EU and UK Parliamentarians to raise issue of HR abuses in their jurisdictions as well.
