China Moves to Defuse Pakistan–Afghanistan Border Tensions

China has stepped in to help ease rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan after fresh clashes erupted along their shared border.

Speaking at a routine press briefing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing is actively using diplomatic channels to encourage communication between the two neighbouring countries.

She stated that China is closely monitoring the evolving situation and stands ready to play what she described as a “constructive role” in improving ties between Islamabad and Kabul.

Addressing the recent violence, Mao said, “Pakistan and Afghanistan are neighbours that cannot be moved away, and both are also China’s neighbours.” She added that as a neighbouring country and friend, China is deeply concerned about the escalation and saddened by the reported casualties.

Reiterating Beijing’s firm opposition to terrorism in all forms, Mao urged both sides to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation. She called on Islamabad and Kabul to resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation, stressing the need for an early ceasefire to prevent further loss of life.

The spokesperson added that China’s Foreign Ministry, along with its embassies in both countries, remains in close contact with relevant authorities regarding the developments.

Mao further noted that China has asked both governments to ensure the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects, and institutions operating within their territories, amid concerns that continued instability could threaten regional cooperation initiatives.
