Body of Ibrahim recovered 15 hours after falling into manhole near Karachi’s Nipa
The body of three-year-old Ibrahim, who fell into an open manhole near Karachi’s Nipa Chowrangi on Sunday night, was recovered 15 hours after an intense search operation that continued into Monday afternoon. The tragic incident took place at around 11 pm when the toddler, accompanied by his family during a routine shopping trip to a nearby departmental store, slipped into the uncovered manhole located dangerously close to the main road. Rescue teams reached the site soon after the fall, but despite hours of searching through the night, they were unable to locate the child, prompting frustration and grief among residents and the victim’s family.
As rescue personnel temporarily suspended the operation due to technical limitations, local residents took it upon themselves to arrange heavy machinery and continue the excavation process independently in an effort to assist in the search. Residents remained present at the scene in large numbers, expressing outrage over the continued negligence of civic authorities who had reportedly been informed earlier about the dangerously exposed manhole but failed to take corrective action. After prolonged and painstaking work spanning nearly 15 hours, rescue workers finally managed to retrieve Ibrahim’s body from deep inside the drainage system on Monday afternoon, ending all hopes of finding him alive.
Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed said that a formal inquiry had been launched to determine why the manhole was left open and assured that strict disciplinary action would be taken against the officials responsible for the lapse. The Deputy Mayor of Karachi also took notice of the tragedy, directing all rescue and municipal teams to remain on high alert and stressing that any negligence leading to the child’s death would not be tolerated. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating that he stood with the grieving family and expected the authorities to ensure accountability.
