Balochistan Incident: 11 Including Tribal Chief Arrested in Honour Killing Case

QUETTA – In a significant breakthrough, Balochistan authorities have arrested 11 suspects, including tribal leader Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, in connection with the honour killing of a couple that shocked the nation last week. As Balochistan CM orders inquiry into video showing couple’s killing.

Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti announced the arrests on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), affirming the state’s resolve to pursue justice.

“Operations are progressing effectively. The state stands with the oppressed, and justice will be served,” CM Bugti stated.

Arrests Include Powerful Tribal Chief

The key development came after law enforcement raided Satakzai House, detaining Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, the chieftain of the Satakzai tribe. His arrest has drawn criticism from Sarawan tribal leaders, who argue that detaining a tribal elder under the pretext of the viral incident is unjustified.

However, officials stress that the crackdown is part of a state-led prosecution, as the victim’s family had not filed any complaint. A formal case was registered under state complaint, bypassing traditional jirga protocols.

Background: Viral Video Sparks National Outrage

The horrific incident came to light after a graphic video surfaced online, allegedly filmed during Eid al-Adha, showing armed men killing a man and a woman in cold blood.

According to Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind, officials used NADRA records and biometric analysis to identify the individuals involved. While the identities and tribal affiliations have been determined, authorities have not disclosed names to the public yet.

“These actions are a stain on our society and cannot be justified under any tribal or cultural pretext,” Rind added.

Honour Killings in Balochistan – A Recurring Tragedy

The Balochistan woman murder case has reignited national debate over gender-based violence and honour killings. Data from the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO) reveals that Balochistan recorded 32 honour killings in 2024, with only one resulting in a conviction.

Government Vows Zero Tolerance

CM Sarfraz Bugti has reiterated that tribal customs cannot override the law. He directed law enforcement to ensure that no political or tribal pressure interferes with the investigation or prosecution.

“These barbaric acts are an insult to human dignity. The state will not remain silent,” Bugti stated.
