- Tareen hasn’t reached out to the politician.
- Umar addressed the media after being granted bail in judicial complex attack case.
- Umar questions his association with Jahangir Tareen.
Asad Umar, the former secretary general of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), recently provided insight into his communication with two prominent politicians within the party – Jahangir Tareen and Fawad Chaudhry. Umar revealed that while Tareen had not reached out to him, he maintained regular contact with Fawad Chaudhry. This revelation offers a glimpse into the current dynamics and relationships within PTI, particularly as key figures navigate their roles and interactions in Pakistan’s political landscape.
Umar’s statement came during an informal exchange with journalists as he left the district kachehri in Islamabad, where he had sought interim bail in a case related to the riots at the judicial complex in the federal capital in March. These riots occurred during party chairman Imran Khan’s appearance in the Toshakhana case. After months of being booked at the Tarnol Police Station, Umar has now been granted bail in the corresponding case.
When asked about his association with Jahangir Tareen and the possibility of joining his party, Umar responded with a rhetorical question, stating, “What association do I have with Jahangir Tareen?” He further clarified that Tareen had not made any contact with him. In contrast, he revealed that Fawad Chaudhry, the party’s former senior vice president, maintains regular contact with him.
Umar’s comments shed light on the decisions and choices made by PTI leaders in the wake of the countrywide riots that followed Imran Khan’s arrest in the £190 million settlement case. While several PTI leaders chose to leave the party, Umar decided to remain. However, on May 24, he resigned from his position as secretary general and also left the core committee.
Despite these changes, Umar has consistently denied quitting PTI or joining any other political party. In a recent statement, he emphasized his commitment to PTI and stated that he remains a member of the party. Umar’s decision to step down as secretary general and core committee member was driven by his belief that, given the current situation following the May 9 riots, he could not continue effectively fulfilling his party leadership duties.
Umar also expressed his condemnation of the damage caused to military installations during the acts of vandalism and arson that took place. In a press conference in Islamabad, he highlighted his concern over these incidents. Umar’s outspoken nature led him to conclude that he would be better positioned to address such issues if he did not hold an official office within the party.

As the political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve, the relationships and dynamics within PTI are crucial to understanding the party’s future trajectory. Asad Umar’s revelation regarding his communication with Fawad Chaudhry and the lack of contact with Jahangir Tareen provides valuable insight into the current state of affairs within PTI. It remains to be seen how these dynamics will influence the party’s direction in the coming months and years.
