Election Commission of Pakistan decides to remove Imran Khan as PTI chairman

In a significant development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has made the decision to remove Imran Khan from his role as the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. This decision follows Imran Khan’s recent conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case.

The ECP’s Political Finance Wing has promptly begun the process of preparing the required documents to officially formalize Imran Khan’s removal from his position as the PTI chairman. It is anticipated that a notification regarding his removal will be issued in the near future.

This decision comes on the heels of a verdict rendered by an Islamabad trial court on Saturday. The court found Imran Khan guilty of “corrupt practices” in connection to the Toshakhana case and handed down a three-year prison sentence. Following the court’s ruling, Punjab police swiftly arrested Imran Khan at his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Humayun Dilawar, who presided over the case, stated, “The court finds it convincingly evident that the complainant (ECP) presented trustworthy, well-supported, and corroborated evidence.” The judge went on to explain, “Hence, the accusations against the defendant have been substantiated, indicating that the accused engaged in corrupt practices by providing false statements and declarations regarding assets obtained as gifts from Toshakhana. These assets were acquired and disposed of during the years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.”

As the legal proceedings continue, political analysts and citizens alike will be closely watching the unfolding events and their impact on Pakistan’s political landscape.
