How Christopher Nolan landed Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow in Batman Begins
Director Christopher Nolan is known for creating some of the most iconic films in recent memory, including Inception, Dunkirk, and the Dark Knight trilogy. In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Nolan recounted how he got actor Cillian Murphy cast in the role of Scarecrow in his 2005 blockbuster, Batman Begins.
Murphy, who had previously worked with Christopher Nolan on 2002’s 28 Days Later, was seeking the role of Batman, although he admits he didn’t feel like he was ‘right’ for the character. “It felt to me that it was correct and right that it should be Christian Bale for that part. But I remember the buzz of trying on the suit and being directed by you. Those tests were high production values,” said Murphy.
Despite not being considered for the role of Batman, Nolan was convinced he wanted Murphy in the film. “I think both of us knew that you weren’t going to wind up playing Batman. But I really wanted to get on set with you, I wanted to get you on film,” Nolan said.
Christopher Nolan set up a screen test comprising two scenes, a Bruce Wayne scene, and a Batman scene, and summoned the executives to watch Murphy perform. “We did those screen tests very elaborately, on 35mm, with a little set. There was just an electric atmosphere in the crew when you started to perform,” Nolan recalled.
The screen tests were high production values, and everyone on set was excited to watch Murphy perform. Christopher Nolan’s decision to cast Murphy as Scarecrow was unanimous among the executives who witnessed the screen test. “Everybody was so excited by watching you perform that when I then said to them, ‘Okay, Christian Bale is Batman, but what about Cillian to play Scarecrow?’ there was no dissent. All the previous Batman villains had been played by huge movie stars: Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, that kind of thing. That was a big leap for them and it really was purely on the basis of that test. So that’s how you got to play Scarecrow,” Christopher Nolan said.
In Batman Begins Murphy played the villainous Scarecrow, an unethical psychopharmacologist who works as the Chief Administrator of Arkham Asylum. He abuses his position as Dr. Jonathan Crane to further Ra al Ghul’s (Liam Neeson) evil agenda, endangering the entire Gotham City.
Despite initially being unsure about playing the role of Scarecrow, Murphy’s performance was praised by both critics and audiences alike. Murphy’s portrayal of the character was chilling and unsettling, making him one of the most memorable villains in the Batman franchise.
Murphy and Nolan have since collaborated on several other projects, including Inception and Dunkirk. Their latest collaboration, Oppenheimer, is set to hit screens on July 21.
The partnership between Murphy and Christopher Nolan has proven to be a successful one. Nolan has a keen eye for talent, and his decision to cast Murphy as Scarecrow in Batman Begins was just one example of his ability to recognize talent and potential.
