6-magnitude earthquake rocks parts of country

  • ISLAMABAD: According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 rattled areas of Pakistan on Sunday. As of yet, nobody has died.

In Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Attock, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir, occupants of high-rise buildings and homes were alarmed by the tremors.

Lahore, Jhelum, and Chakwal in Punjab were also affected by the earthquake waves.

The US Geological Survey estimates that the earthquake’s magnitude was 5.2. NSMC, however, affirmed that it was 6.0.

According to information, the earthquake took place at 10:50 am, and its epicentre was near the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Since the earthquake was 223 km deep, it was felt in several nations, including Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, and India.

It should be noted that no casualties or property damage were reported right away after the earthquake.

Earthquakes frequently occur in Pakistan as a result of the country’s proximity to the point where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide.

Significant areas of South Asia are experiencing seismic activity as a result of the Indian plate, a tectonic plate, slamming on the Eurasian plate from the north.

Recent earthquakes have brought to light the need of catastrophe preparedness and mitigation techniques.
