A 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolts Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Peshawar on Tuesday morning, spreading fear across northern Pakistan. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tremor struck at 10:20am, with its epicentre located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 190 kilometres.

The quake was felt strongly in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, where residents rushed out of homes, offices and schools in panic. In Peshawar and several surrounding districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, people also reported moderate shaking that lasted for a few seconds. So far, no loss of life or property has been reported, officials confirmed.

Tremors were also felt in some areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, highlighting the far-reaching impact of seismic activity in the Hindu Kush belt, which is known for frequent earthquakes due to its tectonic complexity.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid spreading rumours, and follow safety guidelines during aftershocks. Emergency response teams remain on alert, although no casualties or damage to infrastructure have been recorded at this stage.

Pakistan lies in a seismically active zone where earthquakes are common, especially in the northern and northwestern regions bordering Afghanistan. In the past, tremors originating from the Hindu Kush range have triggered widespread concern even when the depth reduces the risk of major destruction.

While today’s quake caused no immediate harm, experts warn that preparedness is crucial, as the region remains vulnerable to stronger seismic events. For many in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the sudden jolt served as a reminder of the country’s susceptibility to natural disasters and the importance of disaster management planning.
