BREAKING: 10 killed, dozens injured in mass shooting at Canadian school

A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, has left 10 people dead, including the suspected shooter, and more than 25 others injured, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

What happened

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they received reports of gunfire at the high school at around 1:20 p.m. local time. Officers issued a Police Initiated Public Alert (PIPA) urging residents to shelter in place as they responded to the shooting.

When police entered the school, they found six victims dead inside. Another victim later died while being transported to a hospital. Two additional fatalities were discovered at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the attack. The suspect was also found dead at the scene from an apparent self‑inflicted injury.

More than 25 people were injured, with at least two victims airlifted to other hospitals due to serious or life‑threatening wounds. Others were treated locally for less severe injuries.

Response and investigation

RCMP officials have confirmed that there are no additional suspects at large and that the public is no longer considered at risk. Authorities continue to investigate the motive and full circumstances behind the shooting.

Prime Minister Mark Carney described the tragedy as “devastating” and postponed planned travel to focus on the response and support for the affected region. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy” and pledged government support.

Impact on the community

Tumbler Ridge, a tight‑knit community of around 2,400 residents, is reeling from the violence. Schools in the area, including both elementary and secondary campuses, have been closed for the remainder of the week as authorities focus on safety and healing.

Officials and local leaders have emphasised counselling and support services for students, families and first responders affected by the incident, which ranks among Canada’s deadliest school shootings in decades.

What’s next

Police and investigators are continuing their work to piece together the timeline of events, identify the victims and determine the motive behind the shooting. More details are expected as the probe unfolds.
