Instagram job scams have been on the rise, especially with the economic downturn caused by the global pandemic. Scammers are taking advantage of the desperation of job seekers and are coming up with new and innovative ways to defraud innocent people. In the case of the woman from Delhi, she fell victim to a job scam on Instagram. She came across a job advertisement on the platform and clicked on a link that directed her to another account. This is a common tactic used by scammers to lure victims into their trap. The account, called ‘airlinejoballindia’, asked her to fill in her personal information, which she did. Soon after, she was contacted by an individual named Rahul, who requested her to pay a ‘registration fee’ of Rs 750. Trusting the legitimacy of the job offer, the woman made the payment. However, the scammer didn’t stop there. He continued to manipulate her into transferring more than Rs 8.6 lakh to his account, citing various reasons like ‘gate pass fee, insurance, security money’. The woman grew suspicious when Rahul kept asking for more money, and eventually reported the matter to the police.
The Delhi Police acted swiftly and arrested the accused. DCP Sanjay Sain revealed that the majority of the withdrawals were made by the accused from Hisar, Haryana, and the mobile location of the scammer was also traced to the same state and location. Shockingly, the accused admitted to scamming people for the past two years, highlighting the audacity and persistence of such scammers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online job scams and the need to exercise caution while searching for jobs on the internet. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics, making it difficult for even cautious individuals to detect their fraudulent activities.
