WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to tag or mention their contacts in status updates, similar to Facebook and Instagram. This feature, called “Status Updates Mention,” is currently being tested in the Android beta version 2.24.20.3.
The company has been working on this feature for some time, and it appears to be nearing a stable release. In the new beta update, users will see an “@” sign in the caption bar when sharing photos or videos in their status updates. By tapping this sign, users can mention their contacts before posting, which is especially useful for group pictures.
Additionally, there will be a reshare button for those who receive the status updates, allowing them to share the update with their own contacts if they choose. Importantly, the identity of the user who mentioned someone will remain private, meaning others won’t see who was tagged.
The good news is that these mentions are private; other viewers won’t see whom you have tagged in your status. Even if the mentioned contact isn’t on the viewers’ list, they will still receive and be able to see the status update.
This feature is still being tested, but beta testers can try it out through the Google Play Beta Program.
