Vladmir Putin Has Been Re-Elected as President of Russia

After Russia finished its three-day presidential election, many people participated, with more than 70% of turn out. Most likely, President Vladimir Putin will win a fifth term in office, amid cyberattacks and protests during the election. Initial results indicate Putin securing approximately 87 percent of the vote, marking the highest recorded outcome in Russia since the Soviet era.

The voting started on Friday and saw a lot of people getting involved. Supporters of a leader named Alexey Navalny encouraged everyone to vote to show their opposition to Putin.

Problems were faced during the voting. Cyberattacks, called DDoS attacks, targeted the electronic voting system. Despite this, the authorities managed to stop the attacks.

People from 129 countries watched the election to make sure it was fair. Also, more than 125,000 Russians voted in other countries.

But while many people voted, there were protests in 17 cities. Some opposition leaders, like Yulia Navalnaya, Alexey Navalny’s widow, told people to spoil their ballots or vote for anyone other than Putin.

Initial results indicate Putin securing approximately 87 percent of the vote, Although Putin emerged victorious, he encountered opposition, as some of his critics were captured on video destroying and interfering with ballot boxes as a form of protest. With his fresh six-year term, Putin becomes Russia’s longest-serving leader in more than two centuries, surpassing the tenure of Josef Stalin.
