One woman has died in Moscow after debris from a Ukrainian drone hit an apartment building, causing a fire, according to Russian officials. The drone, which was shot down by Russian air defenses, left parts of two high-rise apartment blocks damaged in the Ramenskoye district, around 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of the Kremlin.
Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed the incident, adding that the debris led to several apartments catching fire. At least five apartments were destroyed, close to the security services. The area affected has a population of around 250,000 people.
City Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that emergency teams were dispatched to various locations, including areas around Zhukovo and Domodedovo, where Moscow’s largest airports are located. More than 30 flights were grounded following the attack.
Russia said that its air defense systems had successfully intercepted over 70 Ukrainian drones overnight, with at least 15 shot down in Moscow and nearby regions. Additionally, in the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, Governor Aleksander Bogomaz stated that 59 Ukrainian drones were destroyed. Despite the scale of the attack, no casualties or damage were reported in Bryansk.
Ukraine, which has been increasing its domestic drone production as part of its war efforts, did not comment on the incident. Meanwhile, air raid sirens were activated in Kyiv as Russian drones targeted the Ukrainian capital.
This incident is part of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began over two and a half years ago when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion. Ukraine has increasingly used drones to attack Russian infrastructure, including energy, military, and transport targets.
