- Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has warned that the license will be revoked if any TV violates its instructions.
Islamabad: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday barred Television channels from live coverage of the rallies and gatherings in the federal capital ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Pakistan (PTI) Chief Imran Khan’s appearance in the courts.
PEMRA issued a notification and directed the TV channels not to telecast any kind of gathering or rally in the federal capital, warning that the license would be revoked if any TV channel violated the instructions.
The coverage ban would be effective only in Islamabad only for today [March 27].
The PEMRA also said that the live coverage of violent groups and mobs as well as attacks on the law enforcement agencies spread fear and panic.
Reacting to the PEMRA’s decision, PTI leader Shireen Mazari said, “PEMRA will soon be ordering all TV channels to only show what Pineapple Maryam wants shown! Someone shd read this absurd notification which talks of “armless policemen”! I assume it means unarmed policemen but videos clearly show heavily armed police & Rangers. Fascism reigns!,”.
Earlier in the day, the Islamabad administration imposed Section 144 and the police warned strict action against rallies and gathering.
The police also warned the PTI not to bring supporters to the courts during appearance of Imran Khan for hearing of his cases.
Earlier, Imran Khan reached Islamabad from Lahore without his previous way of appearance with hundreds of workers. He reached there along with his personal security. The legal team and the prominent party leaders joined him during his appearance before the court.
