Turkish pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec has gone viral on social media for his relaxed attitude while winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics.
The most popular images show Dikec shooting in a T-shirt with one hand in his pocket, wearing regular glasses, and maintaining a calm expression. He’s been compared to an ordinary person at the Olympics, or even a hitman.
At 51 years old, Dikec is not new to the sport. He’s competed in every Summer Olympics since 2008.
Dikec and Sevval Ilayda Tarhan won the silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol shooting event on Tuesday. It was Turkey’s first-ever Olympic medal in shooting. Mikec and Zorana Arunovic won gold for Serbia, while India’s Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh took bronze.
Unlike Dikec, his teammate Tarhan wore large ear defenders and a visor, and had braids in the red and white colors of the Turkish flag. She also shot with one hand in her pocket.
Dikec finished 13th in his individual event and is now done at the Paris Olympics. He’s looking forward to the next Games in 2028, hoping for a gold medal in Los Angeles.
Dikec seems to be enjoying the attention, reposting a video compilation of Turkish-language memes about him on his Instagram page.
The shooting events were held about three hours’ drive south of Paris. Dikec and Tarhan traveled to the French capital on Wednesday and were greeted with cheers at Champions Park, an open-air venue where medalists celebrate with fans.
Shooters have some freedom in how they dress for competition. Many shooters at the Olympic range in Chateauroux, central France, wear visors to reduce glare or blinders over one eye for better focus. Dikec wasn’t entirely without shooting gear; he wore yellow earplugs to block out distractions during the final. They just weren’t visible from the viral image’s angle.
