Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Annulment of 2024 General Elections in Pakistan

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has scheduled a hearing for a plea seeking to cancel the 2024 general elections. A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, will hear the plea on February 19.

The petition was filed by a private individual who claims that the elections held on February 8 were not conducted fairly and breached democratic norms. The petitioner has requested the court to declare the elections invalid and organize new ones within 30 days, under the supervision of the judiciary, to ensure fairness and transparency.

The recent elections resulted in no single party securing a clear majority in the National Assembly. Independent candidates supported by a jailed former prime minister won 92 out of 264 seats, becoming the largest group.

This outcome has created uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s political future, as none of the major parties, including PML-N, PPP, or PTI-backed independents, gained a simple majority in the National Assembly.

Efforts are underway among political stakeholders to form alliances and secure 169 seats in the 336-member lower house of parliament.

Throughout the election result announcements, independent candidates backed by PTI maintained their lead over mainstream political parties, particularly in the National and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assemblies.
