Stranded students in Battagram Chairlift: Pak Army Initiates Rescue Operation

In a daring display of bravery and prompt action, the Pakistan Army has initiated a high-risk operation to rescue eight students, including seven students and a teacher, who found themselves suspended midair on a malfunctioning chairlift in the Allai Jhangray Pashto region. The mishap occurred due to a cable malfunction, leaving the individuals stranded over a river.

Swift Response by Pakistan Army

Upon receiving reports of the stranded passengers, the Pakistan Army rapidly deployed two helicopters to the site. These helicopters first conducted a reconnaissance mission to assess the situation before embarking on the rescue operation. The mission, currently underway, is a delicate task due to the unstable nature of the chairlift and the potential risks associated with using helicopters.

Expert Concerns and Safety Measures

Experts have voiced their concerns about the operation, highlighting the inherent dangers it poses. The imbalance of the chairlift and the air pressure generated by the helicopters could potentially exacerbate the situation and lead to further complications. Despite these challenges, the Pakistan Army remains steadfast in their commitment to rescuing the stranded passengers.

Urgent Plea from Stranded Teacher

Gul Nawaz, the teacher accompanying the trapped students, made an urgent appeal for help during an interview with Samaa TV. He shared that the condition of the children is deteriorating, with some of them experiencing extreme fear. One child has even lost consciousness due to the distressing situation. Nawaz emphasized that the chairlift is typically designed to carry a larger load, making the current circumstances even more perilous.

Government’s Immediate Response

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar swiftly responded to the crisis, directing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to ensure the safe rescue and evacuation of the stranded individuals. The PM also ordered comprehensive safety inspections of private chairlifts to prevent similar incidents in the future.

NDMA’s Coordination and Expert Involvement

The NDMA has been actively coordinating with the PDMA of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to orchestrate the rescue operation. In a press release, the NDMA disclosed that an Army helicopter has been dispatched for the operation. Furthermore, the NDMA has requested safety audits from all Provincial Disaster Management Authorities concerning tourist infrastructure in their respective regions.

Rescue Operation Strategy

The government is approaching the rescue operation with utmost caution. Aerial reconnaissance has been conducted to gather vital information before proceeding with the evacuation efforts. To ensure the safety of all involved, an expert team from the Pakistan Army’s Special Services Group (SSG) has been dispatched for assistance.

Challenges and Innovations

Syed Hammad Haider, a senior official from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, explained that the cable car is suspended at an altitude ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 feet above the ground. To address the complexity of the operation, the government has requested a helicopter for assistance. Meanwhile, Rescue 1122 teams are working diligently to construct net ropes that will cover the ground area and enhance the safety of the evacuation process.
