Soldier martyred as security forces thwart attempt to disrupt polio campaign

  • As security forces prevent an effort to disrupt the polio campaign, a soldier is martyred.

A tragic incident unfolded in the North Waziristan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as terrorists attempted to disrupt an ongoing polio campaign, resulting in the martyrdom of a brave soldier, according to the military’s media wing on Wednesday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that the terrorists opened fire on a polio team operating in the Spinwam area of North Waziristan. However, the security forces accompanying the team swiftly responded, effectively engaging the terrorists and ensuring the safety of all team members, successfully extracting them unharmed.

The martyred soldier was identified as Sepoy Saqib Ur Rehman, a 25-year-old hailing from District Mardan.

In response to the attack, the military’s media wing stated that the area is being thoroughly sanitized to eliminate any remaining terrorists present.

“The security forces of Pakistan are resolute in their determination to eradicate the menace of terrorism, and the sacrifices of our brave soldiers only serve to strengthen our resolve,” expressed the ISPR.

During an award ceremony held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on May 22, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir stressed the unwavering commitment of every soldier and officer to prioritize their duty and responsibilities, transcending regional, linguistic, and political biases.

General Munir emphasized that a strong army stands as the cornerstone of a nation’s security and unity.

The military’s media affairs wing announced that 51 officials were honored with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (military) award, 22 received the Tamgha-i-Basalat, and two officials were recognized with special United Nations medals. These accolades were bestowed upon them in recognition of their acts of gallantry during operations and their meritorious service to the nation.

“Undoubtedly, we enjoy the freedom and security we have today due to the unwavering sense of duty and immense sacrifices made by our martyrs,” acknowledged Gen Munir. He further described the sacrifices of the martyrs and the dedication of the officials as invaluable assets and sources of pride for the country.
