Skardu, a picturesque town nestled in Pakistan’s northern region, is all set to welcome its first international flight from Dubai on Pakistan’s Independence Day, 14th August. This milestone is a significant development for the region, as it marks the beginning of a new era in Skardu’s aviation history.
Previously, Skardu Airport was declared ‘international’ by former Prime Minister Imran Khan in December 2021. However, its potential to accommodate international flights was hindered by the lack of a proper re-fuelling facility. Fortunately, this issue has been resolved, and the much-needed re-fuelling facility is expected to be inaugurated on 11th August, just a few days before the momentous arrival of the inaugural international flight.
Unlike Gilgit and Chitral airports in the northern region, Skardu Airport has the necessary infrastructure to handle larger airplanes, making it a gateway for long-haul flights. As a result, Skardu has witnessed a surge in tourism, with 12 Airbus A320 flights recently connecting the town to major cities across Pakistan. This increased accessibility is expected to boost the tourism industry in Skardu, attracting more visitors to explore its breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage.
In the midst of these developments, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has clarified an important travel requirement. Passengers traveling to and from Skardu do not need to obtain polio vaccination cards. The CAA has warned against falling for fake online offers that claim to provide such cards, emphasizing that there is no such mandatory requirement. Instead, travelers are advised to check the health policies of the countries they intend to visit, especially regarding polio vaccinations, before embarking on their journeys.

As Skardu gears up to welcome its first international flight, the local authorities and tourism industry stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact this milestone will have on the town’s economy and image. With improved connectivity and the resolution of logistical challenges, Skardu is poised to become a sought-after destination for international travelers seeking adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
On Independence Day, as the international flight gracefully touches down at Skardu Airport, it will mark a moment of pride and promise for the region, opening doors to new opportunities and fostering closer ties with the global community.
