The union representing tens of thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics in South Korea has decided to extend their three-day strike indefinitely. Their goal is to push management into negotiations over pay and benefits. This strike marks the largest labor action in Samsung’s history. Initially planned for three days starting on Monday with over 5,000 participants, it follows a one-day strike in June, the first in Samsung’s history without unionization for decades.
The union, with more than 30,000 members, which is more than a fifth of Samsung’s workforce, has stated that the strike has caused disruptions in production. Samsung, however, claims production will not be affected, emphasizing their commitment to negotiating with the union in good faith.
Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, has a significant role in global high-end chip production used in technologies like generative AI. Despite the strike, analysts believe the impact on production will be minimal due to the high level of automation in semiconductor factories.

This strike underscores the growing tension between Samsung’s management and its workforce, highlighting the company’s recent substantial profit forecast increase for the second quarter, driven by demand for generative AI technologies.
