Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Afridi donate tri-series earnings to flood victims

Salman Ali Agha and Shaheen Afridi donate tri-series earnings

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s T20I captain Salman Ali Agha has announced that he will donate his earnings from the recently concluded tri-nation series to flood victims across the country. He added that star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has joined him in pledging his prize money for the same cause.

The announcement came hours after Pakistan crushed Afghanistan in the tri-series final on Sunday in Sharjah. Led by a fiery bowling attack, the Men in Green dismissed Afghanistan for just 66 runs, clinching a 75-run victory. Mohammad Nawaz starred with a career-best five-wicket haul, while Shaheen Afridi picked up a wicket for only seven runs in two overs.

Salman Ali Agha took to X, formerly Twitter, to confirm that both he and Shaheen would dedicate their tournament earnings to relief efforts for families hit hardest by the ongoing floods. “This is the least we can do for our people who are enduring unimaginable hardships,” the skipper wrote.

This is not the first time cricketers have stepped forward to support flood victims. On August 30, Peshawar’s Imran Khan Stadium hosted a star-studded charity exhibition match where Peshawar Zalmi faced off against a legends’ XI led by Inzamam-ul-Haq. Fans packed the stands to watch Shahid Afridi, Younus Khan, Shoaib Akhtar, and Waqar Younis return to action, raising significant donations for flood-hit communities.

Floods have wreaked havoc across Pakistan since June, triggered by accelerated glacial melts and above-average monsoon rainfall. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that the death toll has now climbed to 910. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the worst-hit province, with 504 lives lost, including 23 children in Buner district alone. Punjab has reported its “worst-ever flood” in history, with over 4.1 million people affected.

As floodwaters surge downstream from Punjab into Sindh, authorities have evacuated more than 128,000 residents from vulnerable areas ahead of fresh heavy rainfall. Relief operations are underway as both the civilian and military administrations scramble to contain the humanitarian crisis.

The cricketers’ gesture has been widely praised, with fans hailing it as a much-needed reminder of solidarity at a time when millions remain displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
