ISLAMABAD: Recent events in Pakistan have seen the arrest of several leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, including Ali Muhammad Khan and Senator Ejaz Chaudhry in Islamabad. They were detained under the Section 3 Maintenance Public Ordinance (MPO).

On the other hand, The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday termed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Pakistan (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest illegal and ordered the immediate release of the former prime minister.

These arrests follow those of other PTI leaders, including Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry, and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who were also detained under the same act. The reason for the crackdown is the violent protests that have erupted across the country following the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan.

The arrest of several PTI leaders, such as Qureshi, Umar, Fawad, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, Falak Naz Chitrali, Mussarat Jamshed Cheema, and Maleeka Bukhari, has been confirmed by the Islamabad police. According to the police, all necessary legal procedures were followed before making the arrests, and they have cautioned that additional detentions may occur in the future.

Qureshi, who is second in line to Khan, was arrested in cases of riots and arsons in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to police sources. Despite his arrest, Qureshi urged party workers to continue their struggle for true freedom in the country.

Not only have the PTI leaders been arrested, but Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khursheed, who has the support of the PTI, has also been confined to his official residence in Islamabad. The move comes amidst tensions in the country, and sources have indicated that the CM’s movement has been restricted, while the region’s home minister and other cabinet members have also been put under house arrest.

The Federal Interior Ministry has warned CM Khursheed against misusing his powers and accused him of giving directions to PTI workers. The CM has been offered the chance to return to the region, and the Islamabad police have attempted to arrest him earlier today. Overall, the situation in Pakistan remains tense, with further developments expected in the coming days.
