Protest Against Israel’s Gaza War at US Capitol

Hundreds of people gathered quickly in the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building, part of the US Capitol complex, for a surprise protest against Israel’s war in Gaza. They wore matching red T-shirts with messages: “Jews say stop arming Israel” and “Not in our name.”

The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). It caught Congressional staffers and law enforcement by surprise but was quickly shut down by Capitol Police, who declared the area a closed “zone” and arrested hundreds who refused to leave.

The demonstration happened a day before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to speak to Congress. Netanyahu’s government has overseen a devastating offensive in Gaza for over nine months, which experts and advocates warn is leading to genocide. Over 39,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed since the war began.

Despite this, the US government has strongly supported Israel. President Joe Biden’s administration has approved over $14 billion in military aid to Israel and vetoed three United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire. Although Biden called for an end to the war in May, he continues to support Israel’s efforts for “total victory.”

Progressive Jewish groups have been protesting across the country, including a similar event on Capitol Hill in October last year. These protests aim to raise awareness and show that many Jews oppose the Israeli government’s actions.

Many demonstrators continued chanting, “Stop arming Israel” and “Free, free Palestine” as they were led away. Capitol Police issued a statement saying the group was illegally demonstrating and had been warned before arrests began.

JVP stated that about 400 people were arrested, although Capitol Police have not confirmed this number. JVP’s executive director Stefanie Fox condemned the US government’s actions, calling for an arms restriction to save lives and end the support for what she described as a genocide in Gaza.
