ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that political parties cannot avoid elections and those who do will suffer political consequences.
In a speech at the Lawyers Complex inauguration ceremony in Islamabad on Thursday, the PM expressed his belief that if the court had accepted the request for a full review, there would be no objections. The prime minister also raised concerns about the overturning of the decision made by Justice Qazi Faez Isa bench through a circular.
Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his position of requesting a review of the court’s decision and urged the court to form a full court in the election delay case, which he believed would be widely accepted. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging one’s mistakes and stated that all stakeholders should take responsibility for their actions.
The prime minister stressed the importance of prioritizing the future of upcoming generations over personal conflicts and requested a review of the court’s decision. He proposed that a sports complex and swimming pool be added to the Lawyers Complex.
The PML-N senior leader acknowledged the sacrifices made by lawyers in restoring the judiciary and expressed his belief that lawyers have been the biggest proponents of the constitution and law. He noted that a 9-member bench was formed initially, but eventually, a 3-member bench was left with only four members in discussion.
The PM gave these statements after the Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial scrapped the decision of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold elections in Punjab on October 8. The apex court set May 14 as new date for the elections in Punjab. The other members of the bench included Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan.
