PIA leases out Roosevelt Hotel to New York firm for three years

  • For three years, PIA rents the Roosevelt Hotel to a New York company.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has recently entered into a lease agreement with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation to lease out the Roosevelt Hotel in the state of New York, USA. This development was announced by the PIA management in a statement released on Monday. According to the agreement, the New York City local corporation will operate the hotel for a period of three years, providing residential facilities to housing migrants.

As part of the agreement, the US firm has also provided an 18-month guarantee to PIA Investment Management. In addition, a settlement agreement has been reached between the New York City Health & Hospital Corporation and the New York Hotel and Gaming Trade Councils, which represents the employees’ union of the Roosevelt Hotel.

In a letter addressed to the stockholders at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the PIA management informed them that following the new agreement, the Roosevelt Hotel has resumed its operations. This comes in response to a query from the PSX regarding the status of the hotel.

The process leading up to this agreement began last month when the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet approved the recommendations put forth by the Ministry of Aviation. The ECC formed a committee to negotiate with the New York City government and the Roosevelt Hotel Union to facilitate the reopening of the hotel.

The Ministry of Aviation had submitted a summary outlining the challenges and proposed reopening of the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. It informed that PIA Investment Limited (PIA-IL) management had received an opportunity from the New York City government to utilize the hotel, which boasts 1,025 rooms, for a duration of three years, specifically catering to the migrant business. The agreed rate for each room was set at $200 per day.

After thorough deliberation, the ECC meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, approved the formation of a four-member negotiating committee. This committee, led by the Secretary of the Aviation Division, was tasked with negotiating the terms with the New York City Government and the Hotel Union.

Furthermore, the ECC authorized PIA-IL/RHC to utilize $1.145 million from the available balance as bridge financing to commence the necessary reopening work at the hotel.

This agreement marks a significant step for PIA and its investment management arm, allowing them to tap into the potential of the hospitality sector and contribute to the accommodation needs of migrants in New York City. With the resumption of operations at the Roosevelt Hotel, PIA is set to further expand its presence and explore new avenues for growth in the international market.
